It tends to be more efficient than the others. Which is why it is the dominant model. Likewise, private police forces and private judicial systems can work. But they aren't as efficient in doing their putative jobs. Both have been theorized and even described in great detail amongst certain flavors of libertarians. While they have enthusiastic supporters, I am more than a little dubious. No doubt there are proponents of private military also. So there are alternative models to everything, with varying degrees of practicality. So by that definition, there are no natural monopolies.
