LoneClone, After a bit of Googling, it looks like there is nothing special about these Australian coal fields or the techniques they are using. Most articles speak respectfully about how the industry and technology was first developed in the US and that CBM production and reserves are much larger in the US. Lots of articles like:

"Replicating the United States Coal Seam Gas Success in Queensland, Australia"

So I conclude that it is not that there is an unusually large production of CBM in Australia, just that there is a tiny population to use the gas - therefore they have surplus gas for export by LNG.

But Santos is claiming 50 to 70 tcf of possible reserves, not sure how many US companies are making those kind of claims?
