It seems to me non-believers are as invested personally and emotionally in their beliefs (or non-beliefs) as anyone else. Perhaps more so.

I don't know about more so; I would question that-- but I do agree they are very invested. I also think, though, that given testable hypotheses or tangible facts or some kind of hard evidence, they would consider alternatives. If not, then they fail in the very area that they claim as their own.
