Novell is on track

A couple of developments that I find significant. First, Schmidt keeps buying time for the middle management to get on board the internet creativity express train.

Example One: the acquisition and investment in a whole series of companies that make a digitalme approach to e-commerce worth having and that do the heavy lifting.

These outside small companies can help a corporation by supplying the worked out idea. Novell can then integrate these products into Novell's underlying systems level technology. It's a nice match. Plus enough of these guys come in the door and you have a new attitude to working with small outside companies while you build out from your systems base.

Example Two: The IBM Europe deal. Schmidt continues to partner with the heavy metal in the industry and get Novell good deals. This is what we pay him for and he does it superbly.

Schmidt has the perfect personality and connections for this business. In Europe when you want to do a deal, having someone with some culture and education counts. The Europeans know that Schmidt will not try to do what many American companies try to do to European culture --- make it more American. He isn't going to MSFT strong arm them into one way deals or engage in cultural imperialism. I think his non-yahoo attitude plays well amongst European companies. Schmidt brings smart American technology without the cultural baggage and exploitation.

You would never see Schmidt doing what the CEO of Cisco did at Davos, but Schmidt is certainly the person I would have buttonholed after that speech to try to set up a meeting with if I were a CEO of a major European company feeling concerned about getting my company on the internet in a way that makes business sense. Other companies bring hype and demands to the table. Novell brings expertise, top level engineering, and results. Novell's directory technology is the way to get your company on the Net.

I also think Novell has gotten on track with regard to the importance of its stock price to the marketing of its technology.

It must look good and feel good to see your stock jump a few points as a result of a less than a two minute interview on CNBC. Getting the Novell message out counts. It counts big. It makes waves. It is worth doing.
