Maybe Obama should talk to Boeing...they evidently did studies several years ago on rapid transit trains and it was found that it was too expensive to be feasible....

As some here know, I was just in Italy. I took trains exclusively to get around and was very impressed with their efficiency. However, Italy, and most other European countries, is much more densely populated than the US.

What makes the European system work is heavy usage and frequent trains. There are hourly trains from Milan to Rome. I was traveling from La Spezia to Florence on a regional train and missed my connection in Pisa. I only had to wait 20 minutes for the next train. I just don't see that happening here.

Improved rail lines might work in this county on the Eastern Seaboard, and maybe in California, but I just don't passenger rail as a feasible option given the distances to be traveled.

I rank Obama's improved rail scheme right up there with windmills and solar panels. Nice feel good ideas, but not very practical on a large scale.

Here's a pic (not mine) of a Trenitalia EuroStar high speed train.
