PSFT and VNTV had a joint customer conference call this week. I was amazed at how casual both Conway and Thomas seemed to be. After the expected Peoplesoft-is-wonderful-Vantive-is-wonderful pep rally, they had very few answers on how Vantive would be assimilated into Peoplesoft. The only definitive product statement was that development on Vantive's next-generation web architecture (code-named Ivan) would continue to move forward. Would the architecture of the two product sets be combined into one? Would a single tool set emerge? Would the user groups, sales forces, etc quickly merge? No answers. Thomas and Conway lobbed these questions back and forth as if they had never been previously considered.

When Siebel bought Scopus, Siebel aggressively assimilated the Scopus product and organization. If anything, Siebel seemed too aggressive. Comparing the two events, Peoplesoft seems set for a leisurely pontoon cruise, while Siebel blasted-off in a speedboat (that would be Tom Siebel in the cool shades and wind-swept hair catching glimpses of himself in chrome fixtures surrounding him. "Damn, you're a good-looking man!" he thinks to himself).

Of course it's too soon to call this merger a failure. I would like to see more vision and urgency from Peoplesoft than we've seen so far.
