The players in this arena today, represented by companies providing equipment covered under IEEE 802.11a and b are generally claiming about a 7Km maximum line of sight transmission at the ISM frequencies around 5Ghz utilizing directional antennas. Incorporting foliage issues, wall penetration, fog, snow, etc, and the results deteriorate from there. This will certainly have applications for wireless LANs, neighborhood networks, as it were, but it is not a terribly robust methodology.
