What operating system are you using and what brand of computer? Some have different ways of booting into safe mode. System Restore could be the culprit if you have xp or windows me. Here's instructions on turning it off.

I have Windows ME, tc. And the computer is a "Gateway Authentic AMD AThalon Processor 256.OBM RAM."

I read the link about disabling System Restore. You think that I should disable System Restore and try running ScanDisk and see if it works that way? It seems easy enough to do....

Does System Restore "write to the drive"?

It is a puzzle, since nothing interrupted the defragging. And also, this is a brand new problem. I've run ScanDisk uneventfully many times.
