Yes, I am very cautiously optimistic. If all goes well, the extremist bad guys may suffer a huge setback.

Incidentally, if an anti-extremist mood takes hold in the region, perhaps old fox Arafat may decide to move towards fulfilling the American conditions for support. Eventually, this may even lead to a lasting settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian dilemma.

Re: the oil. I think that the image of America "annexing" in some way Iraq and/or its oil is pure fantasy. This would be completely out of character, and would simply never happen. The locals – some of them, anyway – would continue to enjoy the revenues.

Just think about it – what is the alternative? Ongoing conflicts, further radicalization of Muslims, and, eventually, today's "extremists" would become tomorrow's "mainstream" – and holders of political power. An Islamic GULAG would probably become a growth industry – "re-educating" former moderates in the ways of the "true" Islam – out in the killing fields.

I have nothing to prove to anyone. Just trying to understand.
