I read that patent too. When I did, it just seemed like a software protocol to me. But your point seems valid. One cannot use DOS or Windows Format commands to format a Zip disk. One must use the Zip Tools format, which uses the protocol to determine if the disk is allowed to be read, written on, or formatted.

I wonder if the enabling data on the disk can be patented. If so, this is excellent protection against Nomai.
