Hello PJ,

With respect to Instant messaging, the area that Jesse fails to address is *security* ...

People seldom think about the information that they are providing to people like AOL and ICQ by using their products in a corporate setting. By looking at your status, I know your work patterns. By looking at your buddy lists, I know your friends and associates, and maybe even the companies that you interact with. When you send through their server, they have the complete ability to "snoop" on your messages if they want to! And on and on ...

This is *not* information that I would want in the control of AOL for their own purposes. It is important to produce a completely distributed IM solution that does away with these security issues ... and the only way is to eliminate the "centralized control" that companies like AOL and CMGI have over the current implementations ... I believe that if Novell misses this point (which I tried to communicate in Novell) then Microsoft will pick up the ball and run ... ;-)

It's almost like the cell phone companies being able to locate you instantly ... you don't think about it too much, but it's a mixed blessing. With IM/Presence your company can be mined for all types of information ... ;-)
