Now I understand why Compaq and Microsoft got together and just said, "We are putting these DSL-Lite (G.LITE) modems in. We standardized it and we paid for it. Now you telephone people do your part." But as far as I can tell, no phone company has really responded in force? Sounds like that could even have been a waste of money for Compaq and the consumer if the phone companies don't latch on. Any news on this?

This isn't exactly an answer, but in a related note a certain very large switch vendor is going out of its way to get ISPs and CLECs to rollout its DSL equipment. They'll provide whatever it takes to make it happen including skewed business cases. Why? Obvious to me - the ultimate revenue stream for this is from the ILECs but the market won't take off until there's more competition. My company bit, then backed off when it became obvious the pricing models required could never hold.
