What a platform really is is a sandbox the party elites give to the grass roots volunteers to play in while the "grown ups" do the important business of picking candidates and spending the money the peons raise for them.

The people who actually hold office with "Rs" behind their name have moved left. The platforms have moved right. I don't think the elites have the luxury of pretending the platforms don't exist anymore. It is coloring the perceptions of the voters.
