I certainly don't read the Venona Secrets as even a remote vindication of McCarthy.

Why not?

The Venona Secrets is a compilation of declassified documents that relate to espionage that was occurring and targetted against the United States during the period around 1940 to the late 50s.

The issue with McCarthy was not whether espionage was occuring but the means that McCarthy was using in the hearings. And extending his vilification of individuals to party association or potential party affliation, in this case the Communist party. Nearly all [if not all] of the individuals that McCarthy investigated were never found guilty of anything, yet became blacklisted as a result of his hearing. There is not today any test required of a person based on their party afflilation, nor should there be. [end of opinion]

I think it would be fair to ask you...

Why do the Venona Secrets vindicate McCarthy?

Regards,
