The Directory War: Now It Really Starts

By Charles Babcock and Todd Spangler, Inter@ctive Week

Novell may face mixed emotions about Microsoft finally shipping Windows 2000. It validates its belief that strong directories of resources on a network will be valuable as the Internet spreads. But it also marks the entry of a rival that could wipe away competition in the process.

On one hand, Novell - which has steadily repositioned itself as an Internet infrastructure provider, rather than an operating system company - will be happy to see Microsoft deliver a competing mechanism for keeping track of all the devices and users an organization has on its networks.

The thinking among Novell executives goes like this: Active Directory will promote the value of directories, but it will ultimately drive customers to Novell when they're looking for a directory that is tuned for doing business on the Internet. One of the prime differentiators is that NDS runs across multiple server platforms, including Windows NT and various flavors of Unix, whereas Active Directory runs only on Windows 2000. In addition, Novell claims, NDS has a higher capacity than Active Directory, with the ability to handle one billion directory entries.

"The fact that Microsoft is shipping Active Directory might work to Novell's advantage in some way," said Sheri Anderson, Novell's chief information officer. "There's a much stronger understanding about how directories help companies manage the extended enterprise."
