I know I sometimes drive people nuts, but I think of the English language as an amazing musical instrument.

Just as with a musical instrument, if you don't know the basic rules you can't really play it.

And as with jazz, until you know the rules you can't break them effectively. You've got to be able to play the scales before you can transcend them and improvise.
