In general you are right, especially in long term situations. However, don't overlook the fact that MM's are the ones doing the buying and selling, and we are the ones who sell or buy from them. In a fast moving stock, NEVER place a market order because the MM will screw you EVERYTIME. Sometime they can have excess shares. Sometimes they have a shortfall. With this in mind, remember that MM's are the one's setting the bid and ask as well. If a big seller wants out, don't be surprised if the MM's "jams" a stock down during the final minutes of the day so they can buy the stock cheap. It's pretty common.

In a lightly traded stock, MM's can artificially keep a stock low or can push it up. Is this illegal? No, because they can justify that there were no buyers or sellers, respectively. However, most MM activity is just plain monkey work. Push the button to buy. Push another to sell.
