In any case, we need to get out of there. Now we can't. For many years.

Concur.
We started it and right now only we can end it. Presently we can only end it by walking out. That is because our opponents welcome death and they have an unlimited supply of recruits.
We were going to be stuck in Afghanistan for years any way we did it.

Afghanistan is not an Iraq.
We could do it with 100 or less ODAs or we can do it with 100,000 troops, or we can do it like the Russians with 550,000 troops.

The time will not be shortened, but with higher numbers we will have higher casualties.

Afghan villages are fiercely independent and support no national government. They have to be taught first how to defend themselves. Then they have to learn the benefits of establishing mutual support pacts with nearby villages.
That will likely take an entire generation of 20-30 years. Only then can regional and eventually a national government expect support.

O thinks he can stand up a national Afghan government and end it quickly. It ain't gonna happen GI.
