That comes of being a democracy. Not only is there a Jewish vote, but about 40% of the country are religious Christians who take an interest in Israel's welfare.

If it was up to the US State Department, we would never have recognized Israel. Harry Truman did it over their strident opposition.

The State Department has been pro-Arab from day one, it's the White House and Congress that have been pro-Israel. You can see the split especially clearly in this administration, when you compare the words of President Bush and Vice President Cheney with those of the State Department spokesmen.
