Where I diverge with you is that you have to have high expectations of people. When you expect people to be excellent, they will come through.

Everybody has been trying to motivate the poor for decades to take an interest in their children's education. They not only fail using present methods, it gets worse. The structure has to change. We know what works. But we can't institute it with the present school bureaucracy.

One of it's pillara is that you don't depend on parental motivation. That is a reed that always breaks. If you get it, great! But run the school on a "no excuses" basis. That is what is working in Harlem. The kids learn from their culture. Which in these areas is a street one. This type of school breaks them from it. It is very much "tough love."
