Bob [Dec Alpha]
I no more than posted the other day (and incorrectly I might add, the 600Mhz was the fastest out), and news of the 1000Mhz Alpha hit mail Mailbox.
I believe it was four years ago that I attended Space Congress here in Cocoa Beach and tested the Alpha running WIN NT, Loved it then, and a year Near the end of 1995 The company purchased a few Alpha 333Mhz machines and I have enjoyed the speed. As for DEC Mainframes, though they are a great workhorse, they have always been a pain when it comes to Maintenance.
Now the newer Fault Tolerant Machines which DEC came out with a few years ago are Great. I had to write a course on the FT810 and FT110 2 years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed working on them. The Days of Main-Frames are growing close to a close in all but a few areas IMHO.
Funny, out of my 22 years on Main-Frames, I always seem to be utilizing them for Real-Time Processing, from $20, $40, & $60 million dollar Flight Simulators to Launching Rockets. Real-Time Processing being a very small percentage in the use of Main-Frames. Unfortunately I still have a VAX Farm of 90 DEC/VAX 3900 and 6000 processors to handle for a few more years here at the Cape.
Hey! Try to stay warm up there...... JW@KSC |
