They are in meltdown over this. They were totally blindsided, despite knowing it was out there, and they are doing a credible job of acting like chickens with their heads cut off. Probably they think it is brutally unfair, here they have been planning how to use their cash in the next few weeks to knock off enough Democrats to keep control, and this drops in their laps out of the blue.

I am sorry that it happened from the perspective of the pages. I was approached once when I was a kid and it felt pretty gross and I wondered if there was something wrong with me. So I am sorry those kids had to read the jerk's emails. Having said that, I think this brouhaha so very much epitomizes the hypocrisy of the GOP. In fact, their hypocrisy was so bad, I believe karma took the matter into her own very capable hands.

The problem they have is this is something that isn't going to play well with a significant part of their base. It could very well have a damping effect on them, and that totally changes the election. Hence the pressure on Hastert to do something. Now the best would be for Hastert to accept the blame and resign. That would keep the taint on him and away from the party in general. But he won't do that. So the Republicans will continue to waterboard themselves.

And of course, Hastert is arguing that his resignation would confirm that the GOP leadership is corrupted and incompetent, opening up the door to a Dem win in the midterm elections. Such a win he asserts would leave the country defenseless against terrorism. You have to wonder how much he believes his own shit. I imagine like many of the GOP he no longer sees the fine line between fantasy and reality.
