I don't know how anyone could have over come the Union ads and get out the Vote No vote.

The most critical error he made was failing to accelerate the distribution of information to the voter. He waited far too long. The unions were phone talking us all to death. I can't count the number of recorded and personal messages we received from the CTA, the law enforcement, firefighters and long shoremen unions. It never seemed to stop. I remember him being quoted as saying they could not out spend the unions. Whether true or not, there were other ways for him to get the word out.

That said, I believe his primary mistake was a failure to use the clout of his popularity with the voter and media from day one in office. He knew this was a liberal and democrat oriented state. He should have jumped on his bully pulpit and stayed there.

Personally, I think he simply became too enamored with D.C. and the A listers, travel to Japan Europe etc. etc.

Perhaps he was simply a greenhorn in the world of California politics.

Whatever his failures, the upcoming candidates will be a helluva lot worse.
