So, Mr President, the bill now being considered in Congress is in direct contradiction to your campaign pledge. Will you now please stand up for principle and issue a veto threat?

Obama will never stand up for any principle that he thinks will threaten his hold on power. That's straight from Alinsky, his political mentor, who says that consistency is not a virtue in politics; one must adhere to what increases power and jettison what does not.

How Obama behaves and reacts as both his allies and his enemies catch on to his style (which he pretty much managed to keep a mystery during the whole campaign), will be the true test of his capacity as a politician. There is a lot of potential for blowback as everybody discovers that you are all about short-term success and cannot be trusted to hold any position for long. This discovery hurt Bill Clinton badly - and Bill Clinton was a political genius. Is Obama? I'm not seeing positive signs, but the jury is still out.
