NYT missed chance to beat WP on Watergate story By Jim Romenesko New York Times Former Times reporter Robert M. Smith says that two months after the Watergate burglary, acting FBI director L. Patrick Gray disclosed explosive aspects of the case and hinted at White House involvement. Smith passed the news along to an editor, Robert H. Phelps, and then left the paper to attend law school. What happened to his tip about the break-in? "I have no idea," says Phelps, now 89.
