LEAD: N. Korea fires 2 short-range missiles into Sea of Japan+

May 26 03:08 AM US/Eastern

SEOUL, May 26 (AP) - (Kyodo)—(EDS: DELETING UNNECESSARY WORD FROM 1ST GRAF)
North Korea on Tuesday fired two short-range missiles off its east coast, a day after carrying out a second underground nuclear test that was condemned by the U.N. Security Council, Yonhap News Agency said, citing a government source.

The firing of the missiles into the Sea of Japan, known to Koreans as the East Sea, came on the same day as South Korea announced its full participation in a U.S.-led global effort to combat weapons proliferation in an apparent reaction to North Korea's latest nuclear test.

North Korea has warned that South Korea's full participation in the PSI would be tantamount to a declaration of war and that it would take "stern" countermeasures.

North Korea also fired three short-range missiles Monday.
