Paul, are you sure the highways are the software, I would say they were the hardware.
Yes, I believe as you do that chip technology will be at the center of most of what we do in 5 to 10 years. The TV/PC can't be more than a year off (in fact it is here with the Gateway Dimension), and it's just a matter of time before this same "appliance" is also a phone, sterio, and controls our home funtions. Voice recognition will make remote contols obsolete (thank God, I must have 7 of the damn things).
Still (I hate to keep saying that), IF we agree that the current x86 will have to be displaced with future advances (1-2-3 years), isn't this a new ball game for Intel and it's competitors? Intel has grown on the strengh of a very narrow focus, being the first, best and cheapest with x86 chips.
I'm not saying it is time to panic, I just think you have to keep your eyes open. Leaders never lead forever, I don't think you can put Intel into the widows and orphans fund and forget about it for 10 years. IF x86 hits a wall, and Intel isn't in front of the change, someone else will be.
