So called supercaps are often used in the place of batteries for some equipment to store settings when powered down. Supercaps have a capacitance on the order of a Farad. EEStor's unit has a capacitance of 31 Farads.

With the enegy contained, failure modes are important to quantify. That is the problem with LiIon batteries, their power density is to the point where they can be dangerous. The recent recall by Sony of a bunch of batteries because they had the habit of spontaneously catching on fire is a recent example. There is a special class of fire extinguishers to handle fires by these batteries in warehouses...
