You didn't have a simple stark choice, applying to all non-senior Iraqi government employees of "take the job with the government or starve." And while its true that many of them might not care for the US or even for the Iraqi government, the credibility of both is a factor in their decisions to take the job.

I am sorry, I thought you meant how credible we are as champions of human rights and freedom.


That wasn't what I was talking about, but my earlier comment would also apply to that idea. (The earlier comment being "I disagree both in terms of the level of credibility you imply the US has, and in terms of how low credibility can go.")

I was talking about credibility in terms of current or potential allies thinking they can stand by us because we will stand by them, rather then abandoning them when the going gets tough.
