The setting of standards by preemption of the market waits for no one. Standards don't have to form the solution that is perfect in all regards. As far as a new standard for the floppy replacement, we wouldn't even be chatting about Zips, EZs and LS-120's if Iomega hadn't gone out and woke up the computing world. Compatibility with the older 3.5" floppy certainly is not necessary. Since I got my Zips, I don't use older floppies at all except to load the occasional new software that comes on them.

The standard is Zip, whether you, or I, or anyone else wishes otherwise. Now, what follows? The Zip 200, the EZ Flyer, or what? I think Iomega has to be very careful with their next product in this category. A Zip 200 brought out too early might just sour sales of both the Zip 100 and Zip 200. Perhaps the Zip 100 would then be discontinued and the 200 brought in at the magic price point $199? Anyway, maybe it's better to skip the Zip 200 and bring out a Zip 400 instead. But a Zip 400 might harm Jaz sales? Gots to be careful!
