Nadine, In a great restaurant in Gettysburg on a Civil War field trip we had a mixed group and discussed this very subject. I grew up in an Irish Catholic family and being a Democrat was assumed. Oh the surprise when I supported Goldwater in '64. Many other Catholics have moved on.

When I asked why the same thing had not happened in the Jewish community the answer was mixed. The message I got was there was a time when the Republican party was exclusive and in their minds closed to Jews. For instance, I can think of private clubs that were closed to them - hence all the small Jewish businesses and professionals?

I think the problem is an understanding of what the Republican party is - or is going to be. It seems to me that the big whig money is now Democrat. Perhaps the excluders are now to be found elsewhere.

As always - I continue to be amazed at how smart people can look at the same facts and draw different conclusions.

Any person who cares about an opportunity society has to be appalled by the course we are on. When the moderate left learns to love their children more than they hate Bush - "change will come". (yeah - I stole the linguistic structure from Golda)
