Report Identifies New Revenue Streams For CRM Vendors; Applications Hosting Opens Doors to Small and Midsize Business Market

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 2000--Internet-savvy customer resource management (CRM) vendors are embracing applications hosting as a means to capture the next hot market on their agenda: small and midsize businesses (SMBs). According to new research by Summit Strategies, Inc., the enterprise market is over saturated with CRM solutions, driving wise vendors to employ innovative tactics like applications-hosting to compete for, and acquire, SMB market share. In her report titled, "Can CRM Vendors Use IAH as a Springboard Into Small and Midsize Business?", Industry Analyst Amy Levy examines the opportunities that applications hosting could cultivate for CRM vendors looking to gain entrance into the SMB market.

"Delivering existing solutions via existing business models won't cut it," said Levy. "To win, vendors must tangibly exploit the application service provider (ASP) model's promise to deliver high-end solutions more easily, quickly and inexpensively in order to satisfy SMB customers' requirements."

In this report, Summit Strategies profiles five leading CRM vendors in their efforts to capture the SMB market through applications hosting: Siebel Systems, Kana Communications (formed by a merger of Kana and Silknet Software), Onyx Software, Pivotal and Interact Commerce (formerly SalesLogix). Levy analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of these companies' applications-hosting strategies and recommends leverage-areas that each vendor may want to focus on to differentiate itself from its competitors.

The report also outlines what smart vendors need to do to succeed in capturing the SMB market through applications hosting. "For example, the big winners in the CRM applications-hosting war will be those vendors that have focused their early efforts on building out solid ASP programs for their SMB-savvy channel partners--not dedicating precious resources to developing internal ASP divisions," said Levy.
