What??? Converting an internal combustion engine to run on natural gas is easy. It's being done right now. Oil sands are (and have been for many years) being utilized for their petroleum products. Shale, at todays crude prices, can be economically developed. Coal to liquid fuel technology has been around since at least WWII (Germans used it) and SASOL in South Africa is doing it today. It's not happening on an industrial scale, which is whats needed. In fact it's not happening at all. Show me some evidence and I'll believe it will happen; until hen it's pipe dream. As for "efficient" vehicles, the free market is quickly taking care of that. Truck and SUV sales have nose dived and small car and hybrid sales have shot up commensurably. People aren't stupid enough to wait around for the government to tell them what to drive... Government tells everybody what to drive. They have 100's of requirements for vehicles, from safety stuff stuff to environmental stuff. Efficiency is just one more regulation... get over it. Oil companies don't fix diddly squat. Of course they do. They set their GP% at COGS. They could, it they wanted to, set their profit at a fixed dollar amount... and then when COGS rose their profit would stay the same, but the end user price would be lower. It's obvious they are not doing this. I have no problem with it.. in fact it's good for the country. They are creating a price umbrella, and it will bite them in the ass.
