Bill,

Item one - sure, all sorts of things happen. If I had all the correct answers I'd be off on some island somewhere enjoying the good life.

Item two - Don't expect anything earthshaking, just some observations many of us can't help but notice. That is the simple truth that to be the best isn't enough. Too many examples, the old beta vs. vhs wars, Apple vs. the PC. Was DOS REALLY the best operating system out there? Why is Microsoft as dominating in their field as they are? Because they were ever the best at anything or because they simply knew how to market and knew how to out maneuver the other guy? IBM never had the best mainframe in the early days but dominated the market in the '60's and '70's because of superior marketing. Even today, their 42t's suck rocks, yet, a very very large aerospace company in the Northwest (which shall remain nameless) buys them up by the truckload in place of HP C-110's and Sun UltraSparcs. O2's? Forget it. Not even on the short list (though a few of everything sneak in for various reasons). Now, from my knothole, I see SGI focus on glitzy displays at trade shows such as Autofact playing up to the techno-types who attend such things. They don't necessarily make the decisions or even have an influence in the buying decisions simply because decisions aren't based on technical considerations - more likely who's who on the board of directors. The big payoff is at that level and needs to be cultivated if they want to sell to the bigs. How? Hell, I don't know.

Larry
