Anne, IMO if there was anything to it, Champion would have already have the Nobel Prize, an auto accident, or choked on a gumdrop, the price of gold would be $50/oz, and lead would be selling for $50/lb. There probably is a low energy transmutation, anything is possible, but the issue is in the ability to economically scale up. We would all be heating our houses with cold fusion if these "tricks" of physics could be readily realized. IMO the reality test is the current gold price. Markets are pretty smart.

PS, for fun, check out gravity on the internet. Some people have been able to alter gravity with high temperature superconductors. However, don't order your spaceship yet.
