There are some newer battery technologies that look promising. I doubt Lithium Ion will be the prevalent battery tech by the end of the decade:

Many of these technologies use easily obtainable, inexpensive materials that are easy and safe to dispose of.

Some will emerge for EV's, and it's possible liquid flow batteries will be used to store power from solar and wind sources for later distribution.
The Ryden Dual Carbon battery uses carbon, and it can be made in existing Li-Ion factories. It charges 20-times faster than Li-Ion batteries, and can last 3,000 charging cycles.
