A reasonably fair appraisal of the CMP world except:

You can buy Aplex asset now at the flea market.

I think he lacks visibility on Obsidian. (I've seen these guys penetrate a lot of accounts in the last 9 months. See AMAT's comment about IBM. You can add some other big names to IBM.)

Other than Mirra, it seems that when I see or hear of new CMP tools going in, it has been Obsidian. I've seen some expansion of POR tools for the rest of the group, but mostly on older, established processes (W, ILD/IMD). I think the Obsidian acquisition is bullish for AMAT. Unfortunately, I don't think this will have a much near term impact on revenues. Why? Due to Mirra market share gains (I think they may get close to 65-70%) there is not a whole lot more to gain and even then the change based on the entire firm's revenue will be small. But for the future this will be a tough act to follow!

Let me understand the SFAM approach...They plan to combine the different technologies on one platform? Does that mean they don't know which works best for a specific customer application or do they only intend to target R&D application? I can't wait to hear their positioning pitch! They are pretty much the AMAT competition and if this is the best they can do, I think AMAT's position is secure.
