MSFT World Wide Live Summary

Spent the day at MSFT's WWLive techfest today. Posting this on IE 3.0 Beta 2 (released today). IE just keeps getting slicker. Main thrust of WWLive was DESIGN CONTROL. MSFT is going all out to have every graphic artist and media company on the web drooling over the design control capabilities that ActiveX can give them. Truly impressive demos. MSFT created a showcase web site for The Nature Conservancy which I recommend viewing to appreciate what's coming. URL is tnc-washington.microsoft.com

Some tidbits:

1. ActiveX available on Netscape via plugin.

2. IE 3.0 (with ActiveX) will be shipping on MacOS and Unix by 1Q97.
Will also be available on Win3.1, possibly with some reduced functionality due to 16-bit limitations.

3. IE 4.0 (Win95 and WinNT only) takes IE 3.0 and integrates it directly into the desktop. Active Themes are going to be huge. Major use I see is for Corporate Intranets which will allow a company to create Active Themes to customize their desktops with company-specific active content (news bulletins, internal helpdesk support, etc.)

4. Shockwave ActiveX control to be shipped as standard part of Win95.

5. Over 2000 ActiveX controls available today.

6. Key design control feature is cascading style sheets, which is a W3 consortium standard which NSCP will support. IE is just first to market with it.

7. microsoft.com gets 15 million hits per day.

Lots more, but it's late. Just wanted to get some of the high points posted.
