Vitamin C which was tried by a Scottish Doctor in 1955, and also by Linus Pauling, may be effective in lengthening the life of Cancer patients. It increases glutathione which is the body's most effective anti-oxidant. This in turn causes basic detoxification of the liver and of body cells. The research conducted by Moertel which attempted to duplicate the Pauling findings, and failed, may have been flawed. Pauling discovered this and spent many years trying to vindicate his research. I think Pauling was the better researcher. It is strange that Pauling who was a lifelong crony of Roger Williams the vitamin researcher did not give more credit to Szent-Gyrogy and his bioflavonoids. The bioflavonoids which were dubbed "vitamin P", when they were discovered, act in very close concert with vitamin C to do their work. In fact, without bioflavonoids it is doubtful if vitamin C alone would be effective against scurvy. P stood or permeability factor as Szent Gyorgy found that these 4000 substances found in vegetables, fruit, tea and chocolate caused capillary permeability to be altered beneficially. There are many other good effects of these food substances that are remarkable. Their benefit to human health is apparently not small. It is apparent too from much research that the "Vitamin P" factor is an important weapon in the war to reduce tumours.

It should be understood here that ALL vitamin tests which attempt to determine the efficacy of a SINGLE vitamin without attendant good levels of ALL OTHER vitamins being present are FATALLY FLAWED. NO VITAMIN may be used by itself. If other vitamins or lipotropic factors are absent or inadequate, no single vitamin is likely to have good effect. This is because more than other substances or drugs, vitamins are definitely interdependent and synergistic as well.

Most single vitamin tests with few exceptions should be ignored except where vitamin deficiency and its symptoms were established by the test. No single vitamin is by itself, a disease therapy in my opinion. Vitamins tests of artificial vitamin compounds may fail for a number of reasons..

1. absorption -- is it biologically available? Is it getting into the lower intestine, and the blood stream? B12 is not very well absorbed orally, so a lot has to be taken. Up to 2000 mcg's.

2. form: is the vitamin of the form that is efficacious? d-Alpha Tocopheral long thought to be beneficial may be more of a toxin than a vitamin. Gamma tocopherol may be effective. And the inorganic or dl form is not effective at all as it poorly absorbed.

3. dosages: is enough of the vitamin being taken? As Williams found, individuals may need widely varying amounts, which subjects vitamin dosology to experimentation case by case.

4. body-perceived deficiency -- is the vitamin forming a deficiency of other vitamins by excess dosage of a single vitamins?

5. masking. Is the vitamin masking a deficiency of the other? B12 may be masked by folic acid, and vice versa, and b12 deficiency may take 5 years to show up, so taking one with the other is required.

A strategy of taking a vitamin in natural form along with foods that contain that vitamin may be a good one. Why take the vitamin at all? Mainly because there are so many toxins in our food and environment that leaching of the vitamins or vitamin destruction within the foods and our body may be occurring. This has been widely documented with insecticides, hormones, and antibiotics as well as prescription drugs for decades.
