Hi Chaz, it’s always good to hear from you. Regarding your thoughts->>> “China Unicom is building out and upgrading from CDMA One, to 1x by March and then seems to be going to 1x EVDO as soon as possible and practical thereafter. These are the "phases". And 1x EVDO is phase three”<<<

I didn’t read Ramsey’s article to indicate phase 3 was going to be 1x EV-DO.

>>> This reporter heard from Guangtong Unicom that as soon as the 2nd phase of the CDMA build out is completed on March 20, Unicom would be starting the 3rd phase immediately. This is advancing the original 1x upgrade plan by one quarter from the originally planned June qtr to the March qtr. This is hinting that Unicom is going full speed on their 3G plans. <<<

From the above statement, I believe they will be commencing the 3rd phase (still 1X) in April, one quarter earlier than originally planned. By doing so, they will then be in a better position to move to 1X-EV-DO (what they consider 3G, but we know that 1X is really 3G also-gg) directly after the MII gives to go-ahead later in 2003 (hopefully) as all of their 3 phases of 1X will be completed by then.

Regarding PCS and VZN dragging their feet in comparison to what’s happening in Korea and Japan, it sure appears to us Qualcomm devotees. As has been discussed before, PCS has capital funding / debt issues that require it to walk a fine line in placating today’s capital market rating agencies. They appear to be more aggressive in marketing their 1X services than VZN. VZN has a more complicated network to manage technology wise, and has always been very deliberate in adding anything new. However, we have to give them some credit for both made the right decision in using CDMA and they both would apparently like to capture some of their 1X upgrade cost before moving on to the next step (EV-DO). Even if EV-DO is on the drawing board now, letting their subs know this fact too soon might dissuade some from buying 1X handsets now, which would impact their expected capacity improvements, and impact us Qualcomm devotees as fewer 1X handsets sales might result.

Just my random thoughts- Jim
