??Limited??
Heavens no!
The beauty of their PHASIC process is that it is adaptable to a wide range of photonic/electronic products, all on a chip, of course, at the moment, anyway.
At the AGM it was stressed, "INTEGRATE, INTEGRATE, INTEGRATE" as the short range future LUMM will be working in where multiple functions will be placed on a single chip one layer at a time. A switch is one such function that will be included, I think. I asked Mark Andrews once, a few months back, if LUMM was working, or would be working, on a fully photonic switch, and he replied that there are ways and means to do so, followed by reference to stuff I don't recall completely nor did I fully understand at the time. As best as I recall the star coupler technique was involved with proper aiming of the multiplexed/demultiplexed beams appropriately involved.
In summary, DWDM is but LUMM's foot in the door to foster the photonic advancements to follow. And THAT is where LUMM will really shine.
