Then, of course, the news that the four independent and influential newspapers that serve the branches of the military will jointly call on Monday for the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld in an editorial entitled "Time For Rumsfeld To Go."

That sentence structure could be a little misleading if you think there are four influential newspapers calling for the same thing, and they are independent of each other. It is one organization, that publishes a paper for each branch of the military. The organization is independent of the military.
