eddie-

Pre-paid cremation policies will no doubt be big in the years ahead.

But I got the low-down on just how cheap cremation is from a funeral director who handles all the cremations of medical remains for all the major hospitals in a large Midwestern city (plus whoever else wheels in the door.) He doesn't have a funeral "Home." He built his own crematorium and comes to get you in the family station wagon. No muss, no fuss. Just a few hundred dollars cost. His advice is to have the service in a church and stay out of the funeral "Home" which is where all the cost comes in. If you want a nice urn order one from him at just above wholesale. If you're a real cheapskate go to Pier I.

Consumers aren't aware yet that there are not-for-profit cremation societies that can arrange the services at reduced cost. They're still beating a path to traditonal Funeral Homes. This will change as Baby Boomers die. Most can't see spending 8-10k or more now on a funeral. They will get increasingly cost conscience about cremation as well.

The winning deathcare company will be the one that markets cremation services at a reasonable price to a generation of heathern Baby Boomers who aren't associated with a church and need a "place" to hold a memorial service.
