Xstrata-Mine Mill talks back at square one

Negotiations between Xstrata PLC and the Mine Mill & Smelter Workers union at the former Falconbridge nickel operations in Sudbury are back at square one.

The union said Friday that its bargaining committee rejected a company offer, the company spurned a counteroffer Thursday night, and “as of today everything is off the table.

The current three-year contract - reached after a three-week strike - expires Feb. 1.

Local 598 Mine Mill & Smelter Workers, a 1,000-member local of the Canadian Auto Workers, started negotiations with Xstrata on Dec. 11 after the Anglo-Swiss company's $18-billion takeover of Falconbridge last summer.

The union said Friday that major issues remained unresolved when the company presented a proposal Thursday afternoon and demanded that the bargaining committee unanimously endorse it and have it ratified by Saturday.

The proposal “fell short on many important issues,” and when the union counteroffer was presented Thursday night, “the company refused any further discussions and stated that their offer was now off the table,” the union stated.

“When we asked them if they expected to start the talks over from scratch, they replied, `Yes, everything is off the table.' ”
