Microsoft says password in some Web
software-WSJ

NEW YORK, April 14 (Reuters) - Software giant Microsoft
Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) acknowledged its engineers
included a secret password in some of its Internet software that
could be used to gain access to Web sites globally, the Wall Street
Journal said Friday.

The article said the manager of Microsoft's security-response centre Steve Lipner ``acknowledged
the online-security risk' and said such a backdoor password is against the company's policy. The
employees had not yet been identified.

There have been no reports that the alleged security flaw has been exploited, the article said.

The computer code, part of which was the comment that rival Netscape rivals ``are weenies' was discovered by two security experts.

Lipner said in the article that the software giant will warn the largest Web-site providers in the U.S. directly about the flaw.

A Microsoft spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Shares of Microsoft closed Thursday at 79-1/4.
