Dan,

A Christian believing in Jesus I think is an active living work. Just believing that He is a historical figure or even that He is the Son of God does not transform a person into a redeemed person.
The devils believe in God and tremble James 2:19
I think we're on the same page in saying that God looks at the intent of the heart when someone calls on Christ to save them not lip service.
Maybe they aren't eloquent or follow a format but they believe in their hearts that they need salvation. They recognize their sinful condition and turn to Christ genuinely asking for forgiveness believing that He died and rose again for them and call on Him to be their saviour.
I remember very well one of those preachers you mentioned "hawking" out salvation prayers... actually it didn't even include individual prayer to my recollection.
I wasn't a Christian at the time but had attended this church at the invite of a friend. The preacher stood at the pulpit at the end of his message and was shouting out "Who wants to be saved!" Pointing at the crowd repeatedly. He shouted this out several times as several people raised their hands.
After closing off with him praying (I think) he then knighted all of those that raised their hands as "saved".
I had not grasped the concept yet of salvation but I can compare what transpired there to fast food. Maybe all of those participating were redeemed that day and maybe none were. I cannot say, but my introduction to what was for me a new idea left me unimpressed and confused.
I have bookmarked the study sight you provided and will get back to you on it. Thank you.
Of interest sake, something I think God is reminding me to do as of late, is to let His word feed me. I've been busy with looking up scriptures in preparation for classes, different projects and research, but lately I sense a need to sit down and just read it for the sake of reading and let the Holy Spirit do what He will. "Faith comes by hearing..." and as I write this Martha and her sister comes to mind in Luke.
God bless you my friend,
John
