Historically Europe was much colder during the Middle Ages. In now temperate England, many paintings depict snow and sleds (some even crossing the Thames!).

No, actually it was warmer during the middle ages; a thousand years ago they grew claret grapes in Southern England, which is now too cold to support that varietal.

I think you are thinking of a later period. The 14th to the 17th century is sometimes called "the little ice age". During that period it was much colder than during the middle ages. The climate has been warming since the mid-17th century.
