I think he sees himself as forcing the Democrats to move away from the center, differentiate themselves from Republicans, and he also sees himself as siphoning votes away from the Republicans.

He'll force Edwards and Kerry left of center and that will alienate them from more moderate democrats.

I think he's just a vain old man.
