So ironic:

"In its most recent ruling on paddling, the U.S. Supreme Court said in 1977 that the Eighth Amendment, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, applied to convicted criminals but not to students. It also ruled that teachers could punish children without parental permission. "

We might as well be at the bottom of the barrel for corporal punishment, since we're going to be there for everything else. Coming in 17th behind Latvia in math, when China and India weren't even on the list because they weren't included in the survey, is just more evidence of the decline and fall of the US. It's not about paddling, or teacher's unions, it's about rampant materialism, and a failure to put education and family first. School age children's families are more likely to put sports ahead of school- the amount of time parents spend on their kids' sports in our area is amazing, and more power to them, if they were ALSO spending time coaching their kids academically, and making them study at home, and putting pressure on them to succeed in a global marketplace, but they are not.
