Zero credit to gates. It takes no vision and no forsight to copy successful competitors and use your monopolistic position in the operating systems market to squeeze the competitors that you copied out of their rightful market. It would be more accurate to say that Gates is the most Banker-like technology CEO ever to run a succesful software company. But he is hardly a visionairy (what did he originally say about the Internet? How about Java? The NC?).

Microsoft isn't the only company to maintain status over the shift to Internet computing. Besides, it has yet to be proven that they were really successful at it. Can they turn billion dollar Internet investments into profitable ventures? They haven't yet.

The real paradigm shift is only starting, and the Internet is a tiny-winy part of it. Microsoft is blowing their wad too early. Can you say "Network Computing?" Sun and Netscape can. Let's see if Microsoft truly survives that shift intact. Only time will tell, but my bets are not on Microsoft.
